Go Back Configuring VSquare Deduplicated Drive

When mounting your deduplicated drive, VSquare will require three different parameters as detailed below:

Storage
This is the drive/folder where deduplicated data will be physically stored. VSquare deduplicated drive works by emulating a virtual device that will transparently deduplicate every write operation. The deduplicated file-system data will be stored in the storage you specify here.

Assigned Size
This is the size that the deduplicated storage disk will have. If, for example, you choose a 1 TB size, VSquare will mount a deduplicated drive with 1 TB of free space. As with a normal disk, you will not be able save data that exceeds the maximum size.

Behaviour
This is where you can choose how VSquare will manage deduplication. You can choose among three modes :

Lazy
Using this mode will favor read and writes operations from and to the virtual device while leaving deduplication process to moments when the VSquare Backup server is less busy. This is the lightest setting from a processing point of view but will also keep unduplicated data in the queue for the longest time. This mode is advised if you have processes that start immediately after the backup and need to access the backup data and you need the highest speed possible while you can have data deduplicated later.

Normal
This is a balanced mode. VSquare will favor read and write operations while deduplicating as soon as there's no disk activity. This setting will leave an average unduplicated data queue and will be generally faster in emptying it.

Active
This mode is more aggressive toward deduplication. VSquare will start deduplicating as soon as there's data to be deduplicated. This mode will leave the smallest deduplication queue behind but it is not advised if you are using backup data immediately for other purposes (copy to another storage or use tape storage). If, instead, you just want your storage to be deduplicated as soon as possible this is the right setting.

All the parameters detailed above can be changed later. You can also later migrate the storage if you wish to do so.
